This 5 minute mindfulness meditation is perfect for beginner meditators. When you start out learning to meditate, if often seems out of reach. Many newcomers to meditation say, “I tried, but I can’t meditate.” They find that their minds are distracted, bored and unable to focus and so they give up. Yet, it is very normal even with very experienced meditators to be distracted with “monkey mind” at times.
Having thoughts is normal, and we can’t stop ourselves from thinking. Advanced meditators just learn to work with it. When you have had more experience in meditating, you’ll learn there are effective strategies for getting past distracting thoughts. First, beginners must learn to “watch their thoughts.” Simply attend to your breath and observe thoughts as if they are clouds drifting across the open sky.
After a while, you may notice that you are running out of things to think about, you begin to attend less to the procession of thoughts and discover body sensations and a sense of expanding spaciousness. This experience is an indication that you are tapping into the underlying spiritual benefits of meditation.
Once I said to a friend, “I can’t meditate for a whole hour” which was a requirement of a particular type of meditation practice I signed up for. And she said, “Can you do it for 5 minutes?” I thought about that, and I said “yes, I could.” Once I limited the time, and didn’t put pressure on myself to do more, it became easier and then when I relaxed into 5 minutes, it felt good to keep going. So welcome to the 5 mindful minutes of meditation.
